We are pleased to announce that Mr Joe Liu has joined the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre (HKIAC) as Assistant Managing Counsel. He commenced the role on 6 January 2014.
Mr Liu was a member of the HKIAC Rules Revision Committee and was instrumental in drafting the 2013 HKIAC Administered Arbitration Rules. Before joining the HKIAC, Mr Liu was a Registered Foreign Lawyer at Allen & Overy’s Hong Kong office, where he was a member of the firm’s global arbitration group. Focusing his practice on arbitration, Mr Liu has experience in international arbitrations conducted under the UNCITRAL, ICC, LCIA, SIAC and ICSID Rules. He has acted in high-value disputes in a wide range of sectors. Before his career at Allen & Overy, Mr Liu worked as Assistant Counsel at the Singapore International Arbitration Centre and did a short stint at the Permanent Court of Arbitration.
In joining the HKIAC Secretariat, Mr Liu will work closely with the team to develop the dispute resolution services provided by the Centre and to promote the use of Hong Kong/HKIAC arbitration worldwide, particularly in China. He will also oversee the administration of arbitrations by the HKIAC under its 2013 and 2008 Rules as well as the UNCITRAL Rules.
Qualified to practise in New York, Mr Liu is fluent in English, Mandarin and Cantonese. He holds LLMs from New York University and London School of Economics and Political Science, and an LLB from Wuhan University.
